Portrait Photography Workshop, National Portrait Gallery, London
Time & Location
About The Event
Suitable for everyone with a DSLR camera and a lens within the 85mm – 50mm range, a photography workshop focussing on all things portraiture.
Not just a day for perfecting your technical photography skills, but a day in which to consider the artistry behind truly great portraits, and how they are achieved.
We’ll start the day at the steps of the National Portrait Gallery in Westminster, London where we’ll have a quick meet and greet, and then head inside to take in some of the portraits on display, specifically the ‘Picturing Friendship’ Exhibition, where we will consider the works on show and discuss elements such as lighting, composition, storytelling, mood, purpose, angles, primary and secondary subjects and exposure values.
With our heads full of creative inspiration, we will then head over to the October Gallery, Old Gloucester Street, where we can refuel in a specially reserved area with a variety of fantastic indoor and outdoor lighting that we can utilise, and we’ll consider some of the more technical aspects of portrait photography. We’ll explore some tips and tricks for using the light, composition, focussing, aperture, shutter speeds and ISO, and also elements such as directing your subject and bringing the best out of them. We’ll take on a couple of challenges to put to use the skills we've looked at. I will be on hand to help you achieve the kind of portraits you want to, using natural light, available light, and camera flash units.
We will be modelling for each other, so come prepared to have your photo taken!
Shortly before the workshop, I will send you an email with some more information, including a short form for you to complete and return, so that I have an idea of anything specific you are hoping to get out of the day.
“Spent the day at Bushy Park with Louise. Really great company and photographer. Was very good at answering any level of question thrown at her. Would definitely book up again.”
- Simon, Hertfordshire
I had a fabulous day taking photos with Louise. She helped me to discover exactly what my camera is capable of. Lots of good advice. Louise is passionate about photography and her enthusiasm is contagious. I highly recommend a course with her.
- Debs, London
Do I need to bring any Lighting equipment?
No Just your Camera & Lens, 85MM - 50MM is ideal for portraits. If you have a flash head, then bring it along.
Do I have to model?
Yes, I’m afraid so! But not much, we’ll all share the load!
How much does the gallery exhibition cost?
Nothing, it is a free exhibition; although it’s good form to leave a little donation as you leave the gallery.
Will there be any refreshments at the October Gallery?
Tea, Coffee, and cake is included in the ticket price, if you want something more substantial then feel free to bring something along, or grab something in between the galleries.
How far away is the October Gallery from the National Portrait Gallery?
About 20 minutes walk, which I recommend, as we can chat about the pictures we have been looking at, but if you prefer, the Picadilly line between Leicester Square and Holborn will deal with most of the distance for you.
Is the course aimed at Beginners?
Beginners and intermediate photographers will get the most out of this workshop, although more experienced photographers are very welcome, for a bit of a refresher, and a bit of culture too.
What if I’m running late?
No problem - just let me know and you can catch us up.
What if I need to cancel?
If you need to cancel, your ticket price will be refunded up to a week before the workshop. If it is less than a week before the workshop, then there will be no refund available, however, I will endeavour to fill the slot with someone else, in which case you will be refunded your ticket cost.
